Pregnancy Ultrasounds

Fetal Morphology Scan at 18-20 weeks

A routine ultrasound scan to review the detailed structure of the baby is recommended at 18-20 weeks gestation for all pregnancies. At our specialist rooms, this scan is provided by staff highly skilled and experienced in obstetric ultrasound.

This ultrasound scan will provide information regarding:

  • Number of fetuses - single or multiple pregnancy
  • Measurements of the fetus, confirming the age and normal growth
  • Detailed structural review of the fetus, to exclude fetal abnormalities
  • Placental position and cervical length

In most cases we can identify the gender of your baby at this scan.

If an abnormality is detected during routine scanning, Dr. Indika Alahakoon can diagnose and counsel you regarding the significance of the findings. As a Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist with many years of experience in diagnosing and managing pregnancies complicated with fetal anomalies, she is able to use her expertise to guide you and your obstetrician regarding further management of the pregnancy. If an ultrasound finding detected at the time of the morphology scan increases the pregnancy risk for chromosomal abnormalities, counselling and immediate amniocentesis can be offered, in order to exclude a karyotype abnormality. Further management and follow-up of a high risk pregnancy with genetic, surgical and paediatric referral can be arranged if required.

In addition to routine scanning, we offer Tertiary / Second Opinion Obstetric scans for previously diagnosed or suspected fetal abnormalities.

We aim to provide 3D/4D imaging with all our fetal morphology scans. Digital Images on CD and DVD are available on request.
